Stable Hands Pottery Studio

Located in the serene setting of Honey Field Farm, the Stable Hands Pottery Studio balances functionality, creativity, and comfort, creating a space that fosters artistic freedom and expression and collaborative craftsmanship. We are an all-inclusive studio and welcome everyone, no matter what skill level or background. Situated in one corner of the barn, sharing the area with dogs, cats, horses, birds and various insects, we have ample space for workshops, private occasions and group events.

The open floor plan studio provides plenty of space to move around without feeling cramped. Stations are spaced out to avoid accidents and promote ease of movement. Our heated classroom is equipped with eight potter’s wheels (Shimpo) and stools (including adjustable height stools). Dedicated damp boxes for freelance potters and for class students, shelving, reclaim buckets (for communal reclaim) and tools. We also have a wide range of underglaze colours available for use. We have a Bluetooth speaker, as well as a CD-player/radio and selection of CDs to enhance the experience.

A separate hand-building and sculpting area is available. With a large, sturdy worktable with ample space for slabs, coils, and tools. We have a slab roller, a wall mounted extruder (with solid and hollow dies), and a wedging table. Numerous plaster and bisque molds are stored on the shelves, texture rollers, letter and number stamps, shape cutters, texture materials, and banding wheels are also available for use.

Our glazing room houses numerous in-house glazes, we are constantly testing new glazes and welcome suggestions. We also have brushes, tongs, and wax resist available. As we store a wide range of chemicals in the glaze room, we have a readily accessible binder of WHMIS sheets, and access to the room is restricted to staff and freelancer potters, and students during their glaze classes.

Our kiln room is an isolated and ventilated space with multiple kilns (three electric kilns), heat-proof flooring, and fire safety equipment. Shelves are available for storage of items ready for firing only. Access is restricted to staff and freelance potters only.

We provide storage for Freelancer potters, labeled shelves for storage of clay, tools and work. We also have a range of reference materials: Books, magazines, glaze recipe binders, and a community board for ideas and techniques.

Inspiration can be gained from other potters’ work, and the natural environment at the farm. We share the space with animals and birds (Pickles the barn cat, Apollo the farm dog, and the multiple horses that live at Honey Field Farm).  The additional comfort of a heated bathroom, and ample free parking facilities further enhance your experience. And let's not forget the delightful touch of free-range eggs available year round ($5 a doz) and seasonal zucchinis, a special treat for all residents when the time is right!
